Meet James L. Waltz, Judge (Ret.)
Private Judge | Orange County Family Law Solutions
Judge James Waltz brings over four decades of legal and judicial experience, including 23 years on the Orange County Superior Court family law bench.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University, Northridge in 1976, followed by his Juris Doctor from Whittier Law School in 1979.
Judge Waltz began his legal career in service to the country as a commissioned Captain in the United States Army, serving as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer in Germany. During his military tenure, he participated in approximately 150 criminal trials, with equal time spent as both prosecutor and defense counsel.
Following his military service, he served as an attorney with the United States Department of Justice in Los Angeles, where he prosecuted organized crime as part of the Strike Force. He then spent 18 years in private practice, handling both criminal and civil litigation in state and federal courts, and was appointed as appellate counsel for the Ninth Circuit.
In 2002, Judge Waltz was appointed as a Commissioner for the Orange County Superior Court, assigned to the Family Law panel as a Child Support Commissioner. During this time, he contributed to the development of bench guides focused on the establishment and enforcement of child support.
He was appointed to the Orange County Superior Court bench in 2008, where he remained in family law until his retirement. Over the course of his judicial career, Judge Waltz presided over the full spectrum of family law matters, including complex and long-cause cases. He was instrumental in advancing the creation of a dedicated department for complex family law matters and presided over that department for several years. One such case extended over 41 days of trial.
Judge Waltz also presided over the parental termination calendar for seven years, handling some of the most sensitive and consequential matters before the court.
His contributions to family law have been widely recognized. He is a recipient of multiple honors, including:
